Tobacco and oral health

a broken cigarette.

Use of tobacco-containing products like cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco like dip or chew, or vaping is harmful to both oral health and overall health. Cigarette smoking accounts for about one third of all cancer deaths. Smokeless tobacco can cause cancer of the mouth, throat and stomach. If you use any tobacco products, including vaping, seeing a dentist for a yearly dental exam is even more important. They can check for any signs of oral cancer.

Other possible oral health effects of tobacco use:

  • Oral cancer
  • Increased risk of periodontal disease
  • Receding gums
  • Stained teeth and tongue
  • Dulled sense of taste and smell
  • Slow healing after a tooth extraction or other surgery
