Foster Kids: possibly our most vulnerable patients
Substance abuse, physical abuse, neglect, mental health disorders; there are many variables that lead to youth being removed from their homes and placed into foster care. While the individual reasons for each youth’s placement may vary, there is one constant that is shared: high risk for chronic physical, emotional, and developmental issues. Furthermore, placement with a foster parent does not guarantee stability. Many placements are subject to change, with some as short as a place to sleep for a night.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, health care for youth placed in foster care is, “often sporadic, crisis-oriented, and poorly accessible. The high mobility of the foster care population among placements, ongoing issues of separation and loss, and the complexities of the foster care system exacerbate these problems.” CareOregon is working hard to improve the health care outcomes for our members in DHS custody. We partner with our clinics to assure the members are seen and receive a comprehensive assessment with Physical, Mental and Dental Health providers within the first 60 days of placement.
CareOregon Dental has a great partnership with its Provider Network to connect all members to their Primary Dental Providers. This partnership is vital as we strive to get 100% of our members who enter DHS custody assessed and educated on the importance of proper oral health practices and shown care that goes beyond their physical needs. With all the uncertainty foster care youth may deal with every day, one thing our members can be sure of is that CareOregon Dental and its Providers will deliver the best oral health care and care coordination possible.
